Soleil - A Brief History

While not really the focus of the story, everyone really wants more background information on Soleil, so here we go.

I know you guys like history and lore; and I do, too, but I don't have time to write out a complete history.  Here is the gist of it.

I won't go any more into depth for the time being; I simply don't have time.  I just put this together because people were curious.

Please do not take this as an open invitation to assist in world building.  I appreciate the interest, but I am very tired.

A Brief History of Soleil Becoming an Empire

The Four Main Marquis Families

The Four Main Marquis families are the original warrior class that supported the Soleil Chieftain during their settlement.  Historically, they have the closest relationship to what is now the Imperial family, and their bloodlines have intermingled.  Unlike the other kingdoms and principalities in the Central Corridor, Soleil did not disband its warrior class as it saw a value in having a permanent military led by a skilled group, to protect themselves.  Eventually, this warrior class was used to subjugate the other kingdoms and principalities in the region.

During the Expansion and Conquest period, the warrior class, considered noble lords, left the Central Corridor to gain more territory for Soleil.  They started by moving westward to conquer and settle the rest of a relatively flat agrarian zone.  This conquest was led by the Tuagh Lords, whose success and loyalty was rewarded by making them a Marquis family: the O'Tuagh family.  They settled on the westernmost tip of the continent to guard the western coastal region at site called King's Harbor, dedicated to the then King of Soleil as a sign of loyalty.  The O'Tuaghs quickly developed the empire's naval power and currently command most of it.

The second region expanded into was the south.  The Guevera Lords crossed the Mezzaluna mountain range to a dry, hilly area.  This was already a populated region.  Though there was no central power to unite them, their familiarity with the region gave them significant ability in defending their territory from the Guevera Lords and Soleil, which kept their armies well supplied.  It took almost two centuries to get Sur completely under their control and part of it was the long process of slowly absorbing existing towns and villages.  It is considered a very ethnically diverse area.

Sur was given to the Gueveras, along with the title of Marquis, for their success and firm defense of the Soleil.  Due to their proximity with a continent just across the water, they do a lot of trading and need to keep a strong standing army and a significant portion of the navy to assert their power in the region and prevent any possible invasions, as well as keep piracy under control.

The eastern region has proven the  most difficult in terms of conquest simply because it is their only land border and under constant attack.  While Soleil now holds a large swath of land that has been safely considered theirs, their eastern border has been attacked numerous times.  Currently, the Duraga Federation continues to attack to try to take what is Osten, the eastern region awarded to the Schwert Lords who became the von Schwert Marquis family.  They have a very strong standing army.

Nordur, the northern region, was settled more than conquered, as it was sparsely populated due to the extreme climate and dangerous terrain.  The Nord Lords started settling around the time of the southern expansion and it was a slow and steady exploration limited by weather conditions and technological advancement.  Most of inland Nordur is barren; most of the population live on the coasts.  The Nordursins settled in Enda, the northernmost tip of the continent.  As they do not have an army or navy in the traditional sense, the Nordursin Marquis family oversee a lot of support work, logistical, medical, and other research to support the other Marches.

The military under the Four Main Marquis Families act as a unified organization that is split into branches for easier management.  They work together and frequently share manpower, sending soldiers and officers where needed, regardless of which marquis army they are assigned to.

Each family also keeps a private guard of knights whose loyalty is to the family.  They are handpicked and trained by each family, and will go to support the army if needed.  Usually, they do escort work and guard the home bases of the Marquis families.

Because of their long history tied very deeply to Soleil, the Imperial family holds them in high regard and often still marries into them.  They are highly respected and considered protectors of the empire.  Their influence on politics is limited due to proximity from the capital and that their focus tends to be elsewhere.  Surprisingly, the Marches are quite wealthy and are often the first to deal with international trade because of their locations.  While they do pay taxes, it inevitably goes back into the armies and navy, including the upkeep of the various fortresses, garrisons, and bases.

The culture of Marquis families is different from other nobles and much of it is tied to their origins as a warrior class that valued pragmaticism and loyalty.  They are far more casual in terms of dealing with class and see no issue in associating with commoners, wealthy or poor.  For the most part, children are raised without a hardline distinction between sexes.  Women also tend to wear what the rest of the empire considers men's clothing more often than any other class, including commoners, as they will wear whatever lets them work best.  Tori almost always wears pants and tunics to the delta and no one questions this, as it is seen as practical; although in her case, she's just used to wearing pants from her original world.

It is the norm for Marquis families to split off into branches amongst immediate family in order to focus on one aspect of the March.  In west, Siobhan focuses on the overall management of the March and the sub marches and various regions within it, while second daughter Bridget deals with the family's businesses, and third daughter, Eili, and son, Andrew, are naval officers.  Family ties are very important in Marquis families, as are ties with the other Marquis families.

It is normal to forgo formalities in private and semi-private settings, particularly amongst each other.  Age is considered more a signifier of rank than actual social rank.  Empress Monica will usually be seen and addressed as a daughter of a marquis by others in a marquis family and she will see this as a norm.  Marquis Lawerence O'Tuagh, who is her father's generation, can and will call her simply by her name.  To be addressed formally in a non-formal setting can be seen as othering; as if one has been cut off from their family.

Family members that do not meet the expectations of the family are simply not given power, regardless of their status within the family.  They are relegated to simple positions, sent to learn other occupations, or removed from the line.  While absolute primogeniture is the rule, it can be contested if family members have no confidence in the heir.  The worst case scenario is to be disowned or, if severe enough, killed.  This is seen as a matter of survival and strength of the march and is a holdover from the warrior class.

Who Are The Duchies?

The five Duchies were originally neighboring small kingdoms and principalities to the Kingdom of Soleil.  They rose to power in a similar way: with settled tribal groups in the region coming together through marriage, alliances, and conquest to have a central power and figurehead to lead them.  The names of these small kingdoms and principalities remain as the surnames of the Ducal families.

A warring period between the six kingdoms and principalities in the Central Corridor lasted roughly three to four centuries, where slowly, the Kingdom of Soleil subjugated the other five and demanded their loyalty or death to all nobles.  In return, they would make the other royals dukes and duchesses, able to keep power and wealth, but ultimately answer to Soleil.  The Kingdom of Soleil's success is credited to having kept a warrior class instead of disbanding it.  The royal family constantly married into powerful families and backed it with succession agreements that were able to control other families, including those of the warrior class, and keep them loyal.

The duchies have significant wealth, land, and thus power.  They still compete with each other for influence and are aggressive in their self-interest.  Their proximity to Horizon gives them a lot of regional local influence.  As they do not keep armies on behalf of the empire, only pay taxes, they are able to accumulate wealth to be used on themselves and their lands.  Often times, the infrastructure of duchies will be better than elsewhere.

The duchies also own the majority of agrarian resources and feed over half the empire, as well as supply the military with food and raw materials as part of their taxes.

Structure of Political Power

It is based on a constitutional monarchy that limits the power of the monarch to keep it from being absolute.  Governing policy, laws, and so forth are voted upon by two representative chambers: one noble, which is inherited; and one commoner, which is elected.  The number on both chambers is equal, but their voting power depends on taxes for nobles and population for commoners, which are reviewed every five years.  This is obviously not a perfect system.

Emperors/Empresses generally play the role of mediators and are tasked with presenting, reviewing, and adjusting various policies and acts.  As such, a Soleil Monarch must have significant political, economic, and social knowledge and ability.  A policy cannot be put into place or acted upon until the monarch approves it.  While they are not bound to approve due to the favor of majority in the chambers, they can be pressured to, but usually, they use this as leverage to make adjustments as they see fit.  They also have a say and vote in the Noble Chamber via a non-ruling family member or Grand Chamberlain representing the family.

Their additional work includes overseeing tax and spending on empire-wide infrastructure and other public works, and dealing with international affairs, including representing the empire when and where necessary.  While not absolute in power, they still have formidable influence in ruling the empire.

All the land in the empire technically belongs to the Imperial family, but are managed by landed nobility on their behalf.  The land is considered and acts as the noble's property that they pay taxes on.  Nobles are always sworn to loyalty to the Imperial family and refusal to do so can strip not only a peerage, property, and wealth from an entire family, but also citizenship, resulting in exile.  Nobility can change, as some lines die out and are replaced, or have been striped of power due to failure to serve and/or severe crimes against the empire and/or the imperial family.  This has never happened to the duchies or the marquis families - which due to their histories have more leeway, but has happened to lower ranked nobles.  Nobles are periodically audited, which was applied during the Young Empire period.

The Emperor/Empress

Mediators & Approvers

The Noble Chamber
(just "The Chamber")

The chamber consists of landed nobility - an inherited title.  Unless a Great Chamber is called, nobles usually send their representatives to Chamber and Joint Chamber meetings.  These positions are held for the duration of that noble in power: until they die or give their position to their heir via succession.

This includes:

  • Imperial Family - Represented by either a family member or a Grand Chamberlain.

  • Duchies (x5) - They represent their own interests.

  • Marches (the big 4) - The submarches report up to the 4 big marches and they try to act as a monolith.

The following are the most numerous and their lands are spread throughout the empire, however are much smaller than the duchies and marches.

  • Counts

  • Viscounts

  • Barons - If they were awarded land.  (Alessa's father has hereditary land, Ilyana's father does not.)

  • Lords - If they were awarded land.

The amount of power in their vote coincides with how much taxes are paid.  They are assigned a calculated percentage out of 100 that total up the votes based on taxes, which are re-examined every five years.
For example: In theory, very wealthy Count that paid a lot of taxes can have more votes than a very poor Duchy that didn't.

The Common Chamber
("Common Chamber")

The Common Chamber is essentially a chamber of representatives elected by commoners to try to balance the political power of the Noble Chamber.  This started during the Empire's early years.  They are often influential and wealthy people in a community; many come from what are now political dynasties, such as the Guthry family.

There are an equal number of representatives as there are noble representatives, as each representative is set to represent a region governed by a noble.  The difference is that their number of votes per representative are based on population of that region.  This means that for the same region, the commoner's vote can weigh more than the noble's.

The Prime Minister is voted on every five years by the Common Chamber representatives and is usually both a seasoned and local politician.

Representatives often move to the capital region during their time in office.  They do not have representatives they pick to represent them in the chamber, as the noles often do.

Numerous political alliances cross chambers in order to get things passed or stop things from passing.  Political dynasties and other very influential commoner families also have ties to nobles through marriage and eventually by blood.  The Martins are an example of an influential aristocratic family with plenty of local noble blood.

Role & Power of the Belcoy Church

Are the gods real?

Yes, but not in a physical sense.  More in a they exist as an energy or feeling, and humans apply names, physical characteristics, and powers to categorize them for their convenience.  They often have crystals, sigils, and animal assigned to them.

Does the Church of Belcoy have political power?

No. Their political power was sidelined early on in the Classical Period for the usual: corruption and abuse of power.  It technically does not have any political power.  They have no vote in how the empire is governed, they pay taxes on their lands, and must abide by Imperial laws.  They provide what is largely cultural and spiritual guidelines and traditions.  How strictly these guides and traditions are followed greatly depend on the region and its people.  Some places follow more closely than others.

However, the social pressure they exert can influence politics indirectly, though it is looked down upon.

Why does the church still exist?

Because people still have faith in a pantheon of gods.  Most of Soleil are casual practioners.  While they believe in the gods and worship them, it is usually only during large ceremonial traditions and life events, such as blessings, weddings, death, and successions.  The gods are also turned to during desperate times for luck or strength or sanity.

What are tri-fecta blessings?

Parents and the godparent decide which three god/esses whose blessings they want for their child.  This is a reflection of what aspects and traits they want for that child to have.  It is believed that this connects them to that god (energy) and will give the child a boost of that particular trait.  Tri-fecta blessings occur after the first lunar month after birth.  Each blessing is placed using an energy infused sigil of the deity and a priest trained in energy reading can see the sigils placed in a triangle on one's forehead.

Are there other religions in the world of the game?

Sure, why not.

Random Q&A

Are same-sex couples accepted by the church and society?

Yes.  Legal and accepted.  Poly-relationships are also fine.

Can priests get married?

Yes, only cloistered religious figures do not get married and fewer specific orders have cellibacy vows.  The rest of the religious figures can marry and have relationships at will, though many in higher positions don't.

Marrying into families...

A spouse would take the surname of the family they marry into and will live within the social umbrella of.  For nobles and aristocracy, they take the surname of the spouse with a higher social rank, unless they are specifically moving into another family.  An example: the O'Tuagh sisters' spouses all took the surname O'Tuagh upon marriage, as they were all of a higher social rank than their spouses.  However, Albert's grandmother comes from Horizon landed nobility, which outranks the aristocratic Martin family she married into; yet, she married into and will act representative of the Martin family.  This is usually decided when the marriage agreement is being worked out during the engagement period.

Shadow on Concrete Wall

Random Sh*t

The site in the game sequel where Sebastian tries to resurrect Victoria and instead summons an undead army is the Cosora Delta.

With Sebastian's monstrous ability, the summon spread through all the interconnected veins, basically reaching all of south, southwest, and southeast Soleil.
